International Small Animal Lung Ultrasound Course 10th – 12th October 2025

The course is led by Natalia Buda, MD, PhD., and two veterinary cardiologists – Katarzyna Kraszewska DVM, PhD. And Michał Gajewski, DVM. Natalia Buda covers the basics of lung ultrasonography (LUS), normal image of the lung, basic artifacts, and features of pneumothorax, pulmonary edema, pneumonia, and pulmonary neoplasia from the perspective of a human medicine doctor. The team of veterinary specialists then presents the perspective of a veterinary practitioner on anatomy and technique of LUS in small animals, pathologies from everyday practice, and some interesting case examples. We also present our diagnostic algorithm, which helps diagnose patients based on LUS abnormalities.

This is a 3-day course, consisting of 12 hours of lectures and 4 hours of practicals. We plan to start on Friday afternoon (5 P.M.) and finish on Sunday afternoon.

The topics covered in the theoretical part are the following:

  • Introduction to LUS, basic artifacts
  • Pneumothorax
  • Pulmonary edema
  • Pneumonia
  • Atelectasis
  • Ultrasound anatomy of the thorax in small animals
  • LUS technique in animals
  • Curtain signs in animals
  • Cardiogenic vs non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema
  • Pulmonary fibrosis/ARDS
  • Color Doppler in lung ultrasound
  • Algorithms in LUS
  • Interesting case examples

On the practical part, every participant gets to perform LUS in both healthy and diseased animals.
